Erosion from flooding

I AM an artist, a photographer, and an observer of Nature.

I started this website as a way to document and share items I find in nature, which appear to me to have been modified at some point in time by forces other than natural erosion.

I am NOT a (professional or formally educated) geologist, archaeologist, or anthropologist.

I AM a very persistent and dedicated observer with an artist’s eye, a little bit of knowledge, a willingness to research, and an open mind.

While I suspect many of the finds pictured here are shaped by human hands, I do not pretend to know with any certainty WHO made them, WHEN they were made, HOW they were made, or WHY. I am only sure of the WHAT - these items have clear, defined, often recognizeable images. One of my goals here is to find ways to capture this imagery in its clearest forms, and to create a record of what is here before it disappears forever.

The artifacts I find are “hidden in plain view.” The art is position-specific, highlighted under certain lighting conditions (generally those which replicate the conditions under which they were created and/or intended to be viewed). The art is often polymorphic, with one specimen containing dozens of images which are visible with slight turns of the stone. Once you learn to see them - you won’t be able to UN-see them. Due to the unusual topography of my site, I suspect my finds represent multiple time periods.

I want you to know that I DO NOT DIG for artifacts. I collect from the surface, mostly in areas of active erosion. It is my understanding that loose surface-finds are not considered part of the archaeological record, and I am free to pick them up rather than let the next storm wash them away.

I have various hypotheses based on personal research and observation, and I continually seek new information. I welcome constructive feedback and sharing of resources and research. If you have actual knowledge or opinions regarding anything pictured here, I would love to hear from you. If you think I suffer from pareidolia and feel the need to reach out to me, then I ask simply that you be willing to provide more in-depth responses to my specific questions.
